Competition Nov. 14th, 2006 @ 10:04 am
Recently I signed up over on the Terragenesis site. Great site and although I am not a big fan of forums (I prefer email lists) I have gathered some good inspiration and comments on my own terrain. While there i noticed that a competition had started. Though I have only been making stuff for a couple of years I feel that my stuff is pretty good. So decided to try my hand at competing.

The particulars of the one I have decided to try is that the base of the terrain be no larger than 15cm square (6inches x 6inches) and must use a toilet paper tube or pringles can somehow in the piece. Simple enough I thought. Next came to decide exactly what to try my hands at. The first thought that came to mind was doing a fountain but I decided to instead try my hands at an old fashioned wooden water tower.

As I do things I will keep a running picture catalog of my work in progress.

Shopping Nov. 3rd, 2006 @ 09:54 pm
Got out on my walk today and decided to go to the Hobby Town down the street. Only thing I went in for was a couple of pieces of balsa wood. Besides the balsa wood though I did spend a few extra dollars. !st was a bit of woodland scenics turf, a small package in yellow to vary from the only color green I had. Also spent a few dollars on a cutter/saw. Will see how good it can be for $4.00. Got lucky this time and spent a total under $10.00.

Ride'em Cowboy! Oct. 22nd, 2006 @ 09:50 pm
As some know I have only been gaming with miniatures and doing terrain a couple of years now. I got started doing it after meeting BravoSix on IRC. He got me started in with some advice, some materials, and some miniatures. Sent me some minis so I could game Vietnam. So I blame him! (wink). Well the other day Bravo was kind enough to send over some Cowboy Wars figures. These are pretty cool as till now I had no horses for my Wild West gaming. One of the others things I found great about this line of miniatures was the fact each pack came with 2 figures in unmounted and mounted poses. I don't have any pictures yet of these they are still in the prep stage and I am waiting for a warm day to prime them.

Even before I knew of Bravos kind gift I had already started a livery stable that I called "C. Danda Livery". I of course laughed at my own play on the title of an old song. But then I am old and tend to laugh at my own wit even if no one else does. One of the benefits to old age besides the discount at Furrs Cafeteria.

C. Danda Livery

The roof needs to be finished, and the rails for the fence and the rest of the landscaping, but I am pleased with the overall look so far.

OH NO! Not another genre!?! Oct. 9th, 2006 @ 02:47 pm
Talking with a long time gaming friend last night, the subject of gaming genres that each was doing or considering came up. So I thought I would share the genres I currently game or plan on gaming in the next year.

Ancients

While wandering the internet one day I ran across a page where a gamer showed off his idea for making an arena in a cookie tin. I have since lost the link but it was inspirational and peaked my interest in doing something with gladiators. Mostly I envision small amounts of miniatures here, perhaps something more character based.

Old West

Well I currently am gaming this era. Some of the plans for this you can see in previous post. Currently have played the rules Six Gun Sound and The Rules with No Name. I also plan on giving Legends of the West and Gutshot a try.

World War I

The only interest in World War One gaming will be in doing dogfights. This is also the only period of aviation gaming I am interested in, at least till science fiction spaceship combat. I plan on using 1/72 plastic kits for this.

World War II

I am going to save my thoughts on this as it deserves a post of it's own.

Vietnam and Moderns

I admit that it was gaming the Vietnam Era that really peaked my interest in war gaming with miniatures and making terrain. In this I have mostly Baker Company figures. Future plans include adding a few more miniatures in 28mm. Not sure what other moderns I would consider playing at this time.

Future Fiction

Although this could fit under moderns I tend to put it more as Post-Apocalyptic gaming. For me it offers a good chance to flex my terrain muscle, especially since I do quite a bit of dumpster modeling. Besides at times I have really dark vision of the future inspired by novels, movies, and just the real world in general. I have used Combat Zone and going to give Mayhem Wasteland Warriors a try.

Fantasy

Way back when there were a couple of board games from Metagaming. Part of the Microgame line Melee and Wizard offered a chance to play duel like encounters between players as fighters or wizards, or even beasts and monsters. These are still played though now we are using some of those old miniatures we have from the early days when we started playing RPG's. The rules themselves have a slight flaw so we have done a bit of tweaking on our own. One day should put those in a web presentable format.

Sci-Fi

I am really not sure what direction to go with this one. My exposure to this genre is limited to board war gaming. And even there I have only ever really played Avalon Hills Starship Troopers and Amarillo Design Bureau Starfleet Battles. I am really lost on this one. I have no desire to play the miniature version of SST, nor the miniature version of SFB. The reason in the first case is simple, I really don't like the miniatures. The reason for the second is I just don't want to play such a mega-game as SFB anymore. Oh well... like I need another genre.

Normally I don't do much in the way of sitting down and planning out my next 10 or so projects. But thought I might share what I am currently working on.

In the Old West

First on my bench, another Wild West style building, that currently has no function. But I am sure it will by the time it is based and has doors and windows set.

Next is the General Store. My first inclination to name it "Olsen's" after the Little House on the Prairie store. But a lot of my inspiration comes from Boulder Colorado, both real and the one in my warped imagination. As I go over names in my head of stores I have visited, or people I knew who hung out in Boulder, I decide to leave it unnamed, for now.

Post-Apocalyptic

Ok, I admit it, I have a love hate relationship with Boulder Colorado, and in my post-apocalyptic games, it is mostly hate ;) I try and truly warp out and the one project I am working on is "The Boulder Theater". In real life the Boulder Theater offers a varied venue of entertainment, in my skewed vision, they offer only one now, porn movies. Here is a picture of the real Boulder Theater as it exists today.

Nope there isn't any pictures of a real project yet for this one, as it is still in the planning stages and is just a few scribbles in a notebook.
